Private Atelier Practice & Contemporary Printmaking

Dekkle is an independent residential printroom set quietly down our garden path in Arlesey, directed by David Borrington MA RCA alongside Louisa Borrington. Grounded in the European tradition of private artist workshops, our teaching balances heavy 19th-century cast-iron machinery with contemporary drawing and darkroom-adjacent light processes. We work strictly in micro-cohorts of three to four practitioners, ensuring uninterrupted press time, personal bench space, and direct master-printer guidance without the compromises of institutional classrooms.

Academic Direction: Louisa Borrington | Master Instruction: David Borrington MA RCA

Directed pedagogically by Louisa Borrington, a secondary school Head of Art whose students consistently rank in the top national percentiles and gain entry to leading institutions including Central Saint Martins, Kingston, Glasgow School of Art, Edinburgh, Goldsmiths, Leeds, and the Royal Drawing School.

Structured across 36 weeks in 4–5 student micro-cohorts within our 5-year curriculum framework, Observation & Translation: Drawing, Lens & Print.

  • Lower School (Years 7–9 | Morning): £2,100 / Year (or £210/mo for 10 months). Observational drawing, mark-making, linocut, and drypoint to build hand discipline.
  • Upper School (Years 10–13 | Afternoon): £2,850 / Year (or £285/mo for 10 months). Advanced copper/zinc etching, aquatint, stone lithography, and photopolymer for portfolio entry.

Master Class Fellowship

Master Direction & Technical Oversight: David Borrington MA RCA

An unhurried, practice-based two-year residency designed as an authentic alternative to postgraduate study. Capped strictly at three artists to guarantee dedicated access to rare 19th-century machinery, master-printer guidance, and private benches without institutional bureaucracy or dissertations. Committed annually across 30 scheduled full-day intensives.

  • Full Fellowship Placements (Strictly 3 Fellows)
    £8,000 / Year     (or £2,666/term across three 10-week terms)
    Scheduled full-day studio access with direct master oversight. Priority use of our 1890 Albion relief press, historic Aubert rolling press, and imperial litho press. Core chemistry, grounds, and acids included.
  • Priority Open Access Option & Scholar Award
    £2,200 / Year     Fellows receive priority reservation for one of five Open Access Memberships for independent printing hours. One subsidised place is awarded annually based on portfolio review.
