Original Platemaking, Analogue Translation & Fine Art Editioning
Our creative service is built entirely around translating your ideas into finished physical works. When you book time at the studio, you work directly at the bench alongside Master Printer David Borrington (MA RCA) in an intimate, collaborative environment. Whether you are bringing raw concepts to be developed or existing imagery to be expertly translated into the physical world, we provide the technical mastery and hands-on guidance to fully realize your vision.
Platemaking & Translation
- Exclusive Studio Access or Work from Home: When you book time here, the entire garden printroom is exclusively yours. Wander in down the path, put the kettle on, grab a fresh coffee, and settle into making work at your own pace alongside the master printer. If you prefer to stay home, we handle the chemistry, platemaking, and proofing entirely by post.
- Direct Artist Matrices & True Grain: Hand drawn and painted marks direct to copper, wood blocks, and Bavarian limestone. We also supply True Grain drafting film by post so you can draw at home with ink, litho crayons, or washes, which we expose directly to photographic litho and photopolymer plates.
- Continuous Tone Photopolymer Intaglio: Steel backed photopolymer plates exposed with calibrated tonal aquatint screens to hold velvety shadow blacks, clean midtones, and delicate washes.
- Photographic & Stone Lithography: Positive photographic litho plate preparation alongside traditional Bavarian limestone matrices processed with gum arabic and nitric acid.
- Relief & Letterpress Matrices: Precision wood blocks, linocut blocks, and polymer letterpress plates prepared for fine typography and relief presswork.
- Archival Pigment Printing: Museum grade A2 fine art pigment printing on mould made cotton rag papers, alongside custom tonal curve film positive production for exposure matrices.
- Artwork Capture & Large Format Film Scanning: Calibrated high resolution digital reprography of physical artwork alongside precision scanning for 35mm, 120 medium format, and sheet film negatives or positives up to 4 by 5 inch.
Collaborative Editioning & Presswork
- A Rare Private Setting: You never share the workshop with crowds or parallel classes. The presses, the inking bays, and the master printer are devoted entirely to your project for the day, offering an unhurried, uninterrupted focus that is practically unheard of in modern printmaking.
- Hand Inked Intaglio Printing: Editions inked, wiped with scrim and palm, and pulled on our historic French rolling press using bespoke oil based inks.
- Lithographic & Relief Presswork: Slow, unhurried editioning across stone lithography, photo litho plates, woodcut, and letterpress on our 1890 Albion platen press.
- Collaborative Proofing: Dedicated trial proofs and artist proofs pulled together at the press to dial in wiping tone, plate bite, and paper feel, or dispatched via postal proof runs if you are working from afar.
- Archival Papers & Linseed Inks: Hand printed on heavyweight mould made cotton rag papers including Somerset, Fabriano, and BFK Rives with custom mixed pigments and plate oils.
- Printer Stamp & Documentation: Every finished edition is blind embossed with the master printer stamp, accompanied by full signing documentation, certificates of provenance, and archival tissue interleaving.
- Direct Atelier Delivery: Finished editions securely wrapped in acid free tissue, packaged safely and shipped insured worldwide or ready for collection down the garden path.
