Embrace Lauren’s Print Journey: A Peek into Dekkle Studio

In the welcoming embrace of our small family-run studio, Lauren Keeley embarked on a captivating creative expedition. With a laser-cut woodcut on our 19th-century rolling press, she crafted three remarkable large prints within a week. Lauren’s artistry defies norms, utilizing woodwork, fabrics, paper, and photography to manipulate perception. This multidimensional mastery weaves optical illusions, enhanced by stark color contrasts and adept lighting. Her works, a blend of sculpture and mixed-media collage, extend beyond frames, capturing singular moments in a grander narrative. Our flexible environment allowed this extraordinary journey to flourish at Dekkle Studio.

I first contacted David in early 2021 as I wanted to make some new etchings. My command of the processes involved was pretty sketchy, but David’s knowledge and enthusiasm immediately set me at ease. We were working in the middle of the pandemic, which in theory should have made things harder. Etching remotely was a new one on me but it worked brilliantly, due in large part to David’s swift communication, skills and generosity. We got some good images out of it and I look forward to working with him again.

Printmaking is an integral part of my art practice and my approach to printmaking is not too dissimilar to how I approach or think about my paintings.
Although I may have a particular image in mind when I start working on an etching plate or a stone, I do rely a lot on the element of chance and surprise. This helps me embrace the unexpected in my work and also allows the work to guide me so to speak.
I have been working with David at Dekkle studios for about three years now. David is a very experienced and patient printmaker. Our personalities are compatible in the sense he listens and allows me to vent my frustrations when the plate or the image do not feel right. He is happy to trouble shoot constantly with me so that we can achieve a desired outcome. After a period of about two years of experimenting and trying things out, I feel like I have developed a language with my prints that feels intuitively mine and that relates to my painting practice. I am looking forward to seeing how my printmaking relationship develops with David and what prints we will be making over the coming years.

Working with Dekkle Print Studio was a real magical experience for me. Finding my way to the beautiful old town of Baldock to develop and produce some long anticipated etchings in a traditional and romantic setting was priceless. David’s knowledge and expertise helped me to realise some large-scale soft ground copper plates. The result had all the depth I had hoped for from such a sensitively made plate. With many a cup of tea and philosophical chat it was a place of work I would be lucky to go back to. The only thing I regret is not having enough time for David’s idea to add aquatint for the large areas of colours. These I ended up hand water-colouring instead. Perhaps I’ll get to do it in the near future.

In search of a departure from hand burnishing, my journey into woodcut editions led me to Dekkle Print. A digital encounter sparked an artistic connection reminiscent of the romanticism found in French ateliers. Guided by David Borrington, his generous advice and technical prowess have supported my exploration. Through him, I’ve ventured into etchings, finding not only technical assistance but also a tranquil and creative director of this modern-day studio.

“Apart from the added bonus of being literally 2 minutes away from my own studio. Deckle Atelier has

everything you need to make prints, with David on hand, to advise if needed. As I’m an artist whose prints are mainly etchings, David has a wealth of knowledge in that field and has really helped me with my work over the years. I would highly recommend David and his studio to help with your printmaking whether you’re a beginner or an experienced artist.”

My practice is interdisciplinary in nature. I have particular interest in customising and combining obsolescent and new systems, and work across a range of analogue and digital visual technologies. My work includes; drawing, print, video, analogue photography, found objects/images and performance. Conceptually my work focuses -in the main- on journeying and walking and I have particular interest in offering counter positions to colonial and male-centric travel cultures. I have exhibited my work and published widely and have experience teaching in various capacities.

Dekkle offer a bespoke service which can be accessed even if you are unable to be in the studio in person, David will talk to you about your project and printing needs – post you prepared plates if necessary and carry out the printing of editions according to your instruction – they are also developing a way to print artists’ designs using a 3d printer, so they will be able to offer their printing services to anyone across the world – as far as I know they are the only print studio offering this unique ‘remote access’ model.
